U.S. Military Operations in Iraq

I don't want to go too far with my post title because Sgt. John M. Russell has only been accused of shooting and killing five fellow soldies on a base in Iraq on Monday. If convicted, he'll likely serve the death penalty. Committing a crime like this has to result in a punishment like that... Right?

NY Daily posts that Russell is currently in custody at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq.

In final note, I can't believe someone would do this. There's still not much information regarding the issue so I can't make too many assumptions or speculations. Like the comment below says, Russell could've had some sort of mental instability. Either way, I couldn't imagine just hanging out in my own base, and then having one of my own soldiers begin open firing towards the good guys.

Whatever the case, I pray that the family members of those who were lost will be able to cope with their losses. May those who died rest in peace.

I pray that Sgt. Russell gets the help he needs too. He is also a victim...a victim of this war. This is just very sad.

I am not happy with what Sgt. Russell did and as a result of what he did he will probably receive the "Death Penalty". A little insight into the person you people are condemning even with out a trial. The person you are judging used to be just like you and I, just a man wanting to support his family. He had the honor of doing it in the Military. I to was in the Army and would have been over there except for a disablility that I receive while in the Army. This man is not the same person I went to school with so many years ago. I was freinds with this man for 6 yrs while in Jr. high and H. school. I do not wish what he did on any one. It is unfortunely one of the tolls to being in this situation. I am still glad that it is over there and not in the streets that we call our Home. I feel for the families that are affected by this and includes Sgt. Russell's family. I only pray that he gets the help he needs to combat whatever demon's are lurking about in his mind. We still do not know the whole story and do not have all the facts, I only ask that you as people who are enjoying the sacifices of his and so many other men and women who are damaged by this war keep an open mind and do not be so quick to judge until you, yourself are put into the position that many men and women are put into overseas. I pray for him and his family to find resolve for the damage that has been bestowed on them. I am very sorry for what has happened to someone I called "My Friend"

The person who wrote this blog is a little kid that just joined the military. If you have been in the service for a long period of time, you would not be so childish. Scum, he is no hero for what he did. Those people should not have died for whatever reason, but you do not know the fact's of what happened at that clinic. They treat you like shit when you go there to the clinic, you get shit on there. I was at that clinic around the same time he was there. He was most likely pushed to far and the people at the clinic threatened him, and all you people see is the result of what happened. He is a soldier just like the rest of us no matter what he did. He is a troubled soldier that will obviously die for what he did. So this third grade name calling and saying scum, is just stupid. Some of our fellow soldier are going through problems and try and seek help. Not everyone handles things the same, some people when pushed to far they snap. Then people blame the person who snapped for what they did and not look at the whole picture of what led up to that. Again before you comment about this message, again. I am not saying what he did was at all right. We know already he will die for what he did, but name calling does not help the issue. If any of my fellow soldiers at my unit did that, I would hate what he did of course. I would know that he would be held accountable for his actions. Find out the fact's before you people act childish. I am more ashamed of you so called soldiers making fun of another soldier for what he did. He was probably pushed around by bullies like all of you.

Only thing is, I am the sister of one of the soldiers John Russell murdered. There was no reason for my 20 yr old brother to die. All he ever did was take care of our mother and our grandmother. And then John Russell decides he doesn't want to finish his contract in the Army, and tries to get diagnosed with something that will get him sent home. Except, he can't. I'm getting really sick and tired of hearing how this man is supposedly innocent and how great of a person he is. I don't care what your excuses are, there is no reason to shoot anyone, let alone 5 people. I wish I could see John Russell suffer, like he watched my brother's face when he shot him in his skull. This asshole needs to die, he needs to be shot in each arm and leg, and dragged near a fireant mound, so the ants can eat him slowly. While they are eating him, I would sit next to him and talk about what kind of a great person my brother was, so he could hear and know and feel the pain he caused me and my family from his selfishness and stupidity. It would be nice to know some people think a murderer deserves the bed he made, instead of trying to protect someone who murdered 5 people.
