Stealing sand from the sea floor and pumping it into your backyard is surely-definitely 110% illegal in Mexico. 5 people have been arrested and the hotel's beach strip has been closed in the Gran Caribe Real Hotel stolen sand scandal. Not only are they accused of stealing sand, they're also accused of preventing the flow of sand to other hotels' beaches.
UPDATE! Mexico Shuts Down Cancun Beach!
The current information from Bitten and Bound - Mexico's attorney general for environmental protection, Patricio Patron stated, "Today we made the decision to close this stretch of ill-gotten, illegally accumulated sand. This hotel was telling its tourists: ‘Come here, I have sand … the other hotels don't, because I stole it.'" Very interesting...
According to the environmental protection agency, 19 million dollars has been spent to restore its beaches after Hurricane Wilma trashed them back in 2005. My guess, they really don't need anyone ruining their beaches.
