Shaiunna Hare

Killer Python and Capture

Shaiunna Hare was the two-year-old girl who was recently and tragically killed by an 8-foot-long Burmese python. According to Charles Jason Darnell, the owner of the python and the boyfriend of the girl's mother, he woke up to find that the snake was missing from its cage.

After this new found information, he ran straight to Shaiunna Hare's room to find the snake on her, and bite marks on the girl's forehead. Darnell stabbed the snake multiple times, but it was already too late. Shaiunna Hare was gone.

According to multiple sources, Darnell did not have a permit to own the snake. This could definitely mean legal actions against him from the state of Florida; where the incident took place.

This is really just a tragic accident. For those of you that have exotic pets, please be aware that no matter how tame they are, things can turn dead. Shaiunna Hare is a sad example of this taking place.

This not "just a tragic accident". This is total neglect. Having an exotic animal (which means they are rarely, if ever "tame") in a home with young children means the animal has to be locked away at all times (clearly this snake was not, if it could leave it's cage) and clearly the child's room was left opened. Simply closing it could have saved her life. These people had no permit to have this animal and were knowingly keeping it illegally. What was their training? How experienced was the 21 year old mother, in handling this kind of 'pet'?
These animals don't belong in homes, esp. those with kids! But as always, these morons put their own egos "hey man, I got me a python at home!" before the safety of their own kids. Tragic accident, my foot. A tragic accident is a kid falling and hitting his head badly or skidding off the road in snow. This is neglect and these people should be punished. I have no doubt the both feel terrible and now regret they ever had this animal in their home but they knew the risks.

It is most unfortunate that a preventable tragedy such as this has occurred in 2009. Once again people are putting our children at risk for selfish reasons such as owning a pet of this kind. There should be laws in place preventing ownership of any animal that requires live food for sustanance. The mother and her boyfriend should both be charged with reckless endangerment, manslaughter and any other charge befitting and be sentenced to prison for a very long time. Personally, the snake should be destroyed, otherwise, we as a society are showing more respect for the life of a rare snake then the life of a rare and special little girl like Shaiunna Hare. No doubt the mother and her boyfriend are in a private hell in their own minds, but it does not in any way compare to the horrific way that little girl died. She probably didn't know what was happening to her and had absolutely defenseless.
